Travel to Charlottesville, Virginia & view the panoramic scenery en route to the University of Virginia, one of Thomas Jefferson's architectural design masterpieces.
You'll go up the mountainside to Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, President, inventor, surveyor, musician & artist.
Free Tours At Monticello House Tours Guided tours of the home are limited to 25 people at a time and run every 4-5 minutes. They last approximately 30 minutes. Because of fire codes and insurance restrictions, the second and third floors of the house are not open to the public.
Smoking and photography are not permitted in the house. Backpacks of any size and bags larger than 11" by 15" by 4" are not permitted in the house and must be left in the parking lot or at the Shuttle Station. Parents of an active child are asked to take turns viewing the house as a courtesy to other visitors.
When the wait for a house tour exceeds 45 minutes, Monticello uses a Line Release System to allow visitors to walk around the gardens and grounds, while waiting to see the house. Simply return to the line at the time indicated on the "line release card" distributed by a Visitors Service representative at the East Walk.
Seasonal Tours April 1 - October 31: (All seasonal tours are included in the price of admission.)
Gardens and Grounds Tours These guided walking tours of the Gardens and Grounds visit the main garden systems of Monticello - flower, fruit and vegetable - and focus on Jefferson's interest in garden as well as the agricultural history of the period. Tours begin on the West Lawn at a quarter past the hour, from 9:15 AM through 4:15 PM. Each tour lasts about 45 minutes.
Plantation Community Tours These guided walking tours visit Mulberry Row and other plantation-related sites near the mountaintop and focus the African-American community at Monticello and the economic operation of the plantation. Each tour lasts about 45 minutes and leaves on the hour from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM from in front of the Monticello Museum Shop.
Seasonal Tours June 15 - August 15: Tours for Children and their Families These special tours are conducted daily, on the hour between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Geared toward children 6 to 11 years old, the tours include hands-on objects and a child-friendly focus, and are included in the price of admission. Register for tours at the Ticket Office upon arrival at Monticello.
Monticello Visitors Center & Film Visitors are encouraged to tour the Monticello Visitors Center. The permanent exhibition, "Thomas Jefferson at Monticello," explores the many facets of Jefferson's domestic life at Monticello. On display are a rich assortment of more than 400 Jefferson objects, artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations, and architectural models and drawings. The exhibit was designed by Ralph Appelbaum, the creator of the United States Holocaust Museum. Admission to the exhibit is free; for a small charge, visitors may listen to a pre-recorded tour of the facility.
An award-winning film,
Thomas Jefferson: The Pursuit of Liberty, is shown in the theater 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM daily (summer hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on the hour - all viewings are subject to change). The exhibition, theatre, a second Museum Shop and the Charlottesville/Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau are located in the Visitors Center. Admission to the movie is free.
